Why do animals hibernate? This is an age old question that most of us still don’t know the answer to. It seems silly and shocking that animals can disappear for a few months, but there’s a good reason for it!
Essentially, hibernation is when animals drop it’s body temperature to be in it’s surroundings, slows down it’s metabolism and heart rate and stores fat rather than glucose. Slowing all cellular processes is what allows the animals to disappear for long periods of time. True hibernating animals can look like they’re dead; if you were to shine a light in a bat cave, you’d see hundreds all lined up looking very stiff!
